My Teaching Plan
Lesson One, Unit 11, Primary English, Book 5B

Good morning, everyone! It’s my great pleasure to be here to share my lesson with you. This lesson is Lesson One, Unit 11 in Primary English, Grade Five, Book B. My lesson has nine parts: analysis of textbook content, analysis of the students, teaching aims, teaching key points, teaching difficult points, teaching methods, learning methods, teaching process and teaching reflection.

Part Ⅰ Analysis of Textbook Content
The content of this lesson tells a story about Mocky, Ann and Ken working together to make a cake for Dad on Father’s Day by following the instructions on the cookbook. Making cakes is an interesting thing for children. However, in their real life, they have little experience of making cakes by themselves. So in this lesson, it is very important to introduce the process of cake making to the children. Of course, it is also important to develop children’s thinking ability in the process of learning to make cakes.

Part Ⅱ Analysis of the Students
As a school located in the urban fringe area, we have much work to do to enhance the students’ English learning quality. As we all know, our students have less interest in English class, they are not active in class and their skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing need improving. Although the Grade-five students have an accumulation of English knowledge, few can use it in real life. However, the content of this lesson is close to life, and attractive to the students. So it will be easy to arouse the students’ interest in learning.

Part Ⅲ Teaching Aims
According to the new standard curriculum and syllabus, after studying the content of textbook and analyzing the rule of children’s growing of mind, I think the teaching aims are as follows:
1. Knowledge aim:
Students understand the story and have a preliminary perception of the key language materials of this unit.
2. Ability aims:
a) All the students can find out the steps of cake making in the text.
b) Students can tell the whole process of cake making using their own words. (Top students)
3. Emotion aim:
Cultivate pupil’s team spirit.

Part Ⅳ Teaching Key Points
Make sure that the students can find out the steps of cake making in the text and can make a simple description of the cake making procedure.

Part Ⅴ Teaching Difficult Points
Make sure that the students can make a description of the cake making procedure.

Part Ⅵ Teaching Methods
We know that in primary school, the main instructional aim of learning English is to cultivate pupils’ basic abilities of listening and speaking and develop a good sense of English. Abilities of listening and speaking are acquired quickly and develop best in a real-life environment, so in this lesson, I mainly use the task-based teaching method to set a real-life environment so that the class can learn in real situations.

Part Ⅶ Learning Methods
1. Create virtual situations to arouse pupil"s interest theories have shown that , the closer the learning environment is to real situations, the faster the acquiring and developing of communication abilities is. So, in my lesson, I designed a role-play activity so that students can learn in a virtual communication situation.
2. Group competition. In my lesson, I organized a group competition to encourage the students" participation and enhance their initiatives.

Part Ⅷ Teaching Process
The teaching process consists of five steps: warm-up, lead-in, presentation, practice and homework.

Step 1 Warm-up

The class will be opened by the exchanging of greetings between the class and I. Then I will start a talk on weekend plans with the students.

—T: What will you do at the weekend?
—Ss: …..

Step 2 Lead-in

I will guide the students so that the above conversation goes like this:

—Ss: ……
—Ss: Watching movies.
—T: Maybe watch a movie is a good idea. I have a good movie.

Then I will present a movie clip about cooking and subsequently continue the conversation as follows:

—T: Is it interesting? So, can you tell me what they are doing?
—Ss: They are cooking.
—T: Can you cook something?
—Ss: Yes/No.
—T: What can you cook?
—Ss: I can cook...
—T: But today, we will cook with Mocky.

Now, it is finished to naturally lead in the new lesson Cooking with Mocky.

Step 3 Presentation

Then, I will ask the class “Can you guess what Mocky will cook?” and guide the students to the answer “cake”. Subsequently, I will divide the class into two groups and tell the class that the group that has a better performance will get a prize for the purpose of encouraging the students to participate and to compete. Then a few minutes will be given to the discussion about what we need to make a cake. The students may give a lot of answers. I will bring the discussion to an end at an appropriate time by saying: “So many things. But in this story, what do we need? Let’s get the answers in the story.”

Now it’s time for me to present the video of the story. After that, show the class the first picture and ask “What’s in Mocky’s hand?” The class may answer “It’s a book.” At this time, I will introduce the new word recipe and tell the class that a recipe is a list of ingredients and a set of instructions that tell you how to cook something and then let the class read the word. Then, ask the class “how about cake’s recipe?” Make sure that the class understand that a cake’s recipe tells us how to make a cake. Finally, let the class open books and circle what they need to make a cake.

Even if the class all know what they need to make a cake, it is still possible, maybe quite certain, that they can not make a cake. So the subsequent thing for me to do is to guide the class through the procedure of making cakes by presenting the prepared pictures one by one. In this process, I will list the first three steps and ask the class to find out the rest steps by looking at the pictures. When the class finish, I will show the class the amounts of all five ingredients and say “Ann was puzzled. Why?” and then let the class listen to the tape and find out why Mocky changed the recipe. Finally, ask the class to retell the steps for making cakes.

Step 4 Practice

Practice involves two activities. One is pair work. That is one person reads the recipe while the other acts it out. The other activity is true or false exercise.

Step 5 Homework

Finally, some homework will be assigned to the class.
1) Finish their own cake’s recipe.
2) Read the story again.

Blackboard Writing:

Unit 11 Cooking with Mocky
Mocky’s recipe
Steps need
1 put ____________ into____________.
2 add ____________ to ____________.
3 mix ____________ and____________.
4 add ____________ .
5 break ____________ into ____________.
6 add ____________ .

Part Ⅸ Teaching Reflection
After this lesson, I think it has been successful.

First, all the sectors are prepared carefully, from the teaching designing, courseware and teaching props preparing, to the trial lecture, revision and finalization of lesson plan.

Second, the degree of difficulty of this lesson is appropriately designed and the structure of the lesson is clear.

Third, all the preset aims have been achieved. During the whole teaching process, the class have shown strong interest and great initiative. They were able to think actively and independently, and understand the steps of making cakes and remember the key words of the making procedure. In the end, most students can make a simple description of the making process according to the blackboard writing.

Of course, there are still some shortcomings in my teaching. For example, I lacked flexibility in dealing with the teaching plan and controlling the teaching process, feeling that I was just reciting the teaching plans. What should I do if the class did not follow my design? In the future days, I will try to strengthen my capability in this aspect. Meanwhile, I need to improve my basic teaching skills such as pronunciation and intonation, speedy and clear blackboard writing, standard teaching language etc.
