The first period
A. Pat meets a tourist. Look, listen and say.
Presentation
Use picture cards to teach the places: Chinese Art Museum, City Stadium, Train Station, Garden Hotel, The Airport and Longhua Temple.
Review the expressions: Excuse me. Can I help you? /What can I do for you?
Show Transparency. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette and point to the speech bubbles. Ask the pupils to repeat after the cassette.
Practice
1. Shoe Transparency. Read the conversation with the pupils. Get them to point to the temple on the map.
2. Divide the class into two large groups. Get them to take turns role-playing the tourist and Pat. Point to a place on the map. The pupils chorus the conversation.
3. Tell the pupils to work in pairs and to role-play Pat and the tourist asking about the places on the map.

The second period
Revision of part A.
B1. Pat and Tim are helping other tourists. Listen and act.
Presentation
1. Teach the concept of which by making it clear that we use which when we are talking about a particular thing or person from a group of those things or people.
2. Write a list of the bus numbers on the board. Next to the numbers write places as the destinations of those buses, e.g. Bus 106-Longhua Temple. Bus 30-Airport. Ask the pupils questions about where the buses go, e.g. Which bus goes to the airport?
3. Draw a line down the center of the board. Ask the pupils Which side is the left side? Write left on the correct side. Ask the pupils what do we call the other side? Write right on the appropriate side.
4. Ask the pupils, e.g. Where is the bus stop for bus number 106? Point to the bus stop from a distance and say It’s over there, on the right/left. Ask about other bus numbers and let the pupils point and encourage them to tell me where is.
Practice
1. Show Transparency. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette. Ask the pupils to tell me then numbers of the buses. Ask Which buses are on the left? Which buses are on the right?
2. Ask the pupils to work in pairs to complete the conversations between the tourists and Pat and Tom.
3. Walk round and listen to the conversations. When everyone has finished, ask confident pupils to come out in pairs and hold the conversations.

Revision of part B1.

Presentation
1. Enlarge the map on page 55 and display it.
2. Review the places by asking, e.g. What can we do at the post office?
3. Ask the pupils to look for two places together. Tell the pupils that we can use beside to explain where places are. Give examples, e.g. The temple is beside the bank. /The bank is beside the temple.

1. Show Transparency. Read the conversation and ask the pupils to repeat it after me. They should trace the route on the map with their fingers.
2. Play the cassette and ask the pupils to listen to the conversation once more.
3. Point out the tourist’s list of places to visit on the left-hand side of the page. Ask the pupils to work in pairs. They ask and answer questions about the other places on the tourist’s list.
4. Ask confident pupils to come out and role-play the conversation. Trace their route on the map to make sure their directions are correct.
B3. Look at the map in B2. Listen and write numbers.
1. Make sure that the pupils realize they need to look at the map above. Tell them to be ready to use their fingers to follow the directions and find out the places. Tell them to write numbers next to the places.
2. Play the cassette and ask he pupils to listen to the conversation.

3. Ask the pupils How many people are there on the bus in picture 4? (A lot) what does ‘crowded’ mean? (It means a lot of people.)
D. Read the story again. Write short answers.
1. Ask the pupils to read the story again. Show them where to write their short answers.
2. Check the answers with the pupils.

E. Say the sound and the words.
1. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette and ask the pupils to listen to the sound and the words. Make sure that the pupils are producing a schwa sound.
2. Say the words slowly and clearly. Check that the pupils are saying the sound correctly.
3. Point to the pictures and check that the pupils can say the words without my model.
4. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette again. Ask the pupils to listen to and say the poem.
5. Ask them to listen to the four words at the bottom of the page and to circle the words with the same letters and sound. Get the pupils to repeat the rhyme.
F. Play a guessing game.
The pupils play the guessing game as shown in their books.
G. Listen, point and chant.
1. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette for the pupils to listen to the chant.
2. Play the cassette again and encourage the pupils to point to the methods of transport as they’re mentioned in the chant.
3. Tell the pupils to work in small groups to practise different verses. Each group chants their verse in turn.
H. Think about it!
Ask the pupils to see if they know directions, i.e. North, East, South, and West. Tell them there are three compasses and they need to circle the one with the correct points.
