Interpretation Plan
Good afternoon , ladies and gentlemen , it’s my great honor to be here to share my interpretation with you . “ Are We Endangered ” , the reading part in Unit 10 of Senior English for China , student’s book 1A is what I’m going to talk about . Since it is a reading class , I’d like first to mention some theoretical backgrounds of reading . Kenneth Goodman ( 1988 ) , a famous linguistic defined reading as : reading is a receptive language process . It is a psycholinguistic process in that it starts with a linguistic surface representation encoded by a writer and ends with meaning which the reader constructs , that is to say , we get information of the author through reading and combine it with our own understanding , thus we establish a new thinking . Reading process mainly includes 2 parts : reading comprehension and reading speed , and these two are also the goal we are aiming at for the reading class , my teaching procedure is strictly based on this principle , thus reaching the achievement that helps students improve their reading ability and communicative capacities . Here I adopt the interactive model for reading . It means that in the process of reading ,linguistic knowledge , such as vocabulary and grammar is combined with non-linguistic knowledge , that’s reader’s experiences , backgrounds ,ect . Following are the four aspects I’m to explain in the plan : the understanding of the material , teaching methods and studying ways , teaching procedure and blackboard design .
I understanding of the material
Just as water is to fish teaching material is to teaching and learning . “ Are We Endangered ” is a reading material , as in the previous class , we have already had a heated discussion about the animals in the world through conversation and act play , so “ Are We Endangered ” offers us further understanding of the endangered animal world , and it also sets a topic or situation for students’ writing .
①. Key points and difficulties
Useful expressions , the direct and indirect speeches are the key points in this lesson . Students have to have a command of such expressions as keep… from , live a better life , take measures , first of all . They two speeches have already been learned before , and in this class , they should be reviewed by doing many practices .
For our Chinese students , the major obstacle of reading in English is the lack of background knowledge and linguistic knowledge , and also here comes our difficulties . So before the class, students have to get as much information as possible . Each one has an encyclopedia dictionary , made of paper or a disk , so this task is easy for them , and we should also emphasize on the indirect and direct speeches , some tense change and person change are the difficulties for students .
②. Teaching objectives
According to the New Curricular Standard of English , when teaching reading , we should encourage students to do speed reading for the time , that’s to say , students should be taught to read as fast as possible on the basis that they get information . through this class , students are to master the new words and useful expressions ,improve their reading abilities and develop their moral consciousness . After learning this class , students are to be more aware of environmental protection .
③. Dealing with the material
It is a reading class , so the comprehension will be highlighted . There are altogether 3 paragraphs in this text , so students should have to find out the main idea of the text and they are to answer some post-reading questions . We focus on the reasons for animals’ being endangered and the ways we do to help . Skimming , scanning and task reading are adopted here .
II teaching methods and studying ways
Well, now let’s come to the teaching methods and studying ways . I adopt communicative approach in my class . Situational teaching method is the primary one , and some action is the auxiliary one . Students are trained to learn and think independently . Computer , screen , slide are invited in my class . Presentation , practice and production are the 3 teaching models in my class .
III teaching procedure
Teaching procedure is the most important part of my interpretation plan , 7 steps are involved in my class
Step1 Greetings and leading-in Discussion
I will begin my greeting with “ How are you getting on these days ?” and “ How is the food in your school ?” , then it will naturally come to the animals and plants . After that , students are to have a small discussion about the relationship between animals , plants and some other non-living things , when click the mouse , the relationship scheme will be displayed on the screen.
Step2 New Words Presentation
In this part , I will show the class a picture of yellow weasel , which is trapped in a basket . It’s a picture from a newspaper . Students are required to talk about it , then I will have a conclusion , during which , the new words will be presented in the blackboard . Students are going to read the new words and some useful expressions , such as habitat , endangerment ,take measure ,original ,ect . Some further explanation will be done to the new words.
Step3 Reading Comprehension
Comprehension is the most important part .
Activity 1 pre-reading discussion
Ok , here , I will show the students some pictures of Penguin and Camel . T hey live in 2 extreme environment , the south pole and the desert , and here the 4 pre-reading questions are asked in a more concrete way , taking penguin and camel as an example . For instance , what do camels do to survive in places where it is very hot , where it isn’t much water , and what about penguin ? In a more concrete way , students can have a better understanding .
Activity 2 Reading and listening
Play the computer , the whole text will appear on the screen , and I have recorded the text in the computer , students should listen to the recorder and read the text . Read , while listening , they are required to find out the general idea .In this part , listening ,reading are integrated .
Activity 3 Careful reading
This time , it’s a task-based reading process . Students should read carefully this time and keep in mind the following 3 questions : 1.what does Steve Jones do?2.If we want to live a better life and have a bright future ,what must we do ?3.what can we do to help? While reading, students are also to underline some key points and some unfamiliar words and expressions . Most of the useful expressions will turn out in the answers to the 3 questions.

Step4 Discussion
The discussion questions are about the endangered animals listed in the post-reading part . Students are to discuss in groups of 4 , the front 2 turn around . After discussion , one represent will stand out to share with the rest of the class their opinions .
Step5 Consolidation
Here , Students should turn back to their books , I’ll give them 3 minutes to read the text again loudly , and then to do 4 true or false questions . Reading loudly can deepen their impression on the text and improve their pronunciation . If it is true , students are to read out the statement , if not , they should correct them and read out his own correct one . The 4 statements are :
①. we,human beings, are alone in the world .
②. we don’t always do as we say.
③. if the habitat of a species is changed or destroyed, the species has to find a new place or adapt it.
④. we can do nothing to help.
Step6 Summary
In this period , we have learned the whole passage well , and I will give them the summary about the text , and instill some moral thinking into them , as we should try to protect our environment so that we can live a better life and have a bright future . There are many things we can do to make our world better . Even small things can make a big difference .
Step7 Homework
There are two homework here , a written one and an oral one .
Turn to Page 67 , read the second part in post-reading to see what Jennifer will do every day and write their own list , read out the lists when they come back next class . This is for them to improve their writing ability . As it is a tips listing ,so the students have to look up many reference materials to get information . It also can improve students’ autonomy learning ability . Retelling the text is the oral one .
IV blackboard design .
Since I present most of the important points on the screen , so my blackboard work is very simple . In the middle of the blackboard is the title of the text Are We Endangered , below it is the new words and expressions .
