高中英语说课(Module 6)
Unit 18 Beauty
Lesson 1 What is beauty?
PART 1 UNDERSTANDING OF THE TEACHING MATERIAL AND THE STUDENTS
1. STATUS AND FUNCTION
The lesson of the unit I pick up today is aimed at serving the function of reading comprehension. But listening, speaking and writing will also be practiced in it.
(And in this period I will lay my emphasis on the improvement of the students’ reading skills. As for the language points, I will deal with them in the next period.)
And this lesson is the first one of unit 18, it is about what is beauty in your mind. Everyone admires beauty. Everyone has his own standard about beauty. So it is very important to the growth of a student and related to our daily life.
2. TEACHING KEY POINTS
1. Develop the students’ reading skills: finding out topics; finding out detailed information; working out meaning of words, etc.
2. Master the usage of some useful words and expressions;
3. According to what we learnt and practiced in the lesson, students can say something about what is the real beauty in their mind.
3. TEACHING DIFFICULTIES
1. How to grasp the main idea of a text or a passage;
2. Our students are afraid of making mistakes in speaking English, it’s not easy for them to open their mouth and speak English. So knowing how to use some words and expressions freely and put them into use in real communication may be difficult.
4. ANALYSIS OF THE STUDENTS
On one hand, most of the students have adapted themselves to Senior High English learning through various activities. And the students of this age are full of curiosity. They are active, friendly with each other and eager to show what they know. On the other hand, our students are easily bored with a long passage while reading with a lot of words, we should constantly arouse their interest in learning more about the passage.
PART 2 TEACHING AIMS AND DEMANDS
1. Knowledge objects
In this lesson, I want the Ss:
(1) To practice reading strategies for working out the meaning of words through context;
(2) To learn and use vocabulary related to “beauty”; and practice expressing one’s opinion;
(3) To talk about “beauty” in their eyes;
(4) To write a short passage about the beauty around them.
But more importantly, I will teach the Ss some ways of learning English. Because I think ways is more important than just remembering some language points. And I hope the Ss can enjoy themselves while learning.
2. Ability objects
(1) To improve students’ reading abilities such as skimming, scanning, comprehending etc. To train students’ listening, reading and speaking abilities.
(2) Through different tasks, students’ communicative and cooperative abilities will be well trained;
(3) According to the new concepts of new curriculums, to show students how to learn is much more important than to give knowledge. So I will make the Ss the real masters in class while the teacher myself acts as the director, and teach them some effective ways of learning English, I think it is more important than just ask them to remember some words and expressions. And I believe this will help lay the foundation for their future learning and lifelong learning.
3. Moral objects
Because this lesson is about beauty, so I hope after learning this lesson, students can get to know that a person’s inner beauty is much more important than physical beauty. And students can become more sensitive to the beauty around them.
What’s more, in class I will try my best to make the Ss enjoy themselves while learning so that we can enjoy a happy and harmonious atmosphere in class. I believe this is a real beauty in our real life.
PART 3 TEACHING AIDS:
(1) The Blackboard;
(2) A multi-media Computer;
(3) A Power-point.
PART 4 TEACHING METHODS
Communicative method
A task-based teaching method
Elicitation method
Learners- centered method
Situational method
PART 5 TEACHING PROCEDURE
Step 1 Lead-in
Task 1: Thinking and speaking
1: Show the students some pictures related to beauty and attract their interest.
And raise the question: what is beauty to them? Then I will set two examples:
To ducks, a pool of clean water is a beauty.
To a mountain climber, a vast world from a hilltop is a beauty.
My opinion: In this part, my purpose is to lead in the question and to show two examples for students to follow so that they can modify well in the following part.
2: Then I will show more pictures and ask students to think it over and answer: What is beauty to them?
My opinion: In this part, I wish to use more different pictures to stimulate students’ imagination and thinking. And at last we can reach an conclusion.
3. In conclusion: Beauty is quite different in the eye of different people.
Task 2: Ask students if they have ever heard of the expression “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and discuss the meaning of the expression; then ask them to look at the three idioms and choose the one closest in meaning to the expression.
Slide 1: Have you heard of the expression “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”? Which of the following idioms is closer to its meaning?
a) Beauty is only skin-deep.
b) Birds of a feather flock together.
c) The eyes of love are blind.
In Chinese, they mean: “金玉其外, 败絮其中”
“物以类聚, 人以群分”,
“情人眼里出西施”.
My opinion: These two tasks are designed to attract the students’ interest in learning something about beauty. I also wish to stimulate students’ imagination and arouse students’ interest. I think that is a necessary preparation for reading.
Task 3: Ask students to look at the list of words and expressions first. Students read the text fast and find the words which mean the same as the words and expressions in the list. Check the answers as a class.
Slide 2: Please match the key words with correct definition.
consistent never change
die out disappear or stop existing completely
physical concerning material things
inner a person’s mind or soul
criteria standard by which sth. is judged
accompany go together with
subjective a personal view or opinion
dimension part of situation
My opinion: In this task I wish my students can get enough vocabulary related to the reading. That is also a necessary preparation for reading.
Step 2 While-reading
Activity1 :Read the text and decide the following sentences are True (T) or False (F).
Slide 3: True (T) or False (F) questions
1. Margaret Wolfe believed that the standard of beauty always keeps the same, not changes.
2. Nowadays, if you wear corsets to achieve a body shape, it will be considered unhealthy.
3. In all cultures, the beauty should be always slim.
4. The human race would soon die out if we could only see beauty within a set of limited criteria.
My opinion: This task is designed to train the Ss to read the passage fast and get the general idea.
Activity2:
Please read the paragraph2 & 3 carefully and fill in the blank.
adapt with Example Supporting details
Time
In 19th century corsets to achieve a body shape
woolen shawls to be attractive
In the past tattoo or body art as an addition to costumes, to show family associations or to mark criminals

Activity3: Further understanding
Please read the passage carefully and answer the questions.
1. Describe one way that standards of beauty have changed with time?
In the 19th century Europe, women used to wear corsets to achieve a body shape that is no longer considered healthy.
2. How are tattoos seen nowadays compared to the past?
They are seemed as a form of body art. But in the past they used to mark family associations and were even used to mark criminals.
3. Why is inner beauty more difficult to determine than physical beauty?
Inner beauty is found in a wider range of personal qualities. Judging the appeal of a person’s inner beauty is much more subjective.
My opinion: These two steps are designed to get the Ss to read the text carefully to find out more details about it, have a further understanding of the whole text and get the main idea .
In this process, I will show students some pictures related to the questions, to draw their interest.
Pic1. Have you ever heard this Chinese poem?—楚王好细腰,宫中多饿死
A beauty should be slim!
Pic2. Tang Dynasty——A beauty should be plump!

Pic3. a pair of beautiful hand (white, soft and smooth)
Pic4. two pairs of old hands
2. Ask the Ss some questions to give them some ideas about how to say something about this topic:
(1) Do you think the model is very beautiful and attractive? Why? (her clothes, her hands or skin, her voice…..)
(2) Are your parents still young? Have your parent done a lot for you? Do you love them?
(3) Do you agree that a person’s inner beauty is much more important?
3. Give them some useful words and expressions to help them make this contrast.
My opinion: Give Ss a chance to open their mouths and say something about “what is the real beauty in their mind”. Ask them some questions and give them some useful words and expressions which can help them to voice their opinion. Give them a chance, they can do it well and improve their oral English.
Step 4 Homework
