Lesson plan interpretation
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. It’s my pleasure to interpret my lesson here today. The lesson plan I am going to talk about is from SEFC Book 1A. Unit 8, the reading course——The Olympic Games. I’ll explain how to teach and why do so from following aspects: understanding of the teaching material, teaching methods and studying ways, teaching procedure and blackboard work. Besides, I’ll show some theoretical basis among some aspects if it is necessary
Understanding of the teaching material
My understanding of the teaching material includes 4 parts: the status and the function, the key points, the difficulties and the teaching objectives. I’ll not talk about them separately.
The Olympic games is a reading course. It’s mainly about t he history and the development of the Olympic. According to the national curriculum of English and language learning theory, when teaching reading, we should encourage the students to do speed reading for the time. That’s to say, we should encourage our students to read as fast as they can when they do the first reading. So much emphasis should be put on reading skills and reading comprehension as well. So in order to fulfill the learning task of this lesson, I make out following objectives:
A. Knowledge objectives
Students should have a full understanding of the reading material and learn some background knowledge after class. Then students will master some useful words and expressions such as compete, competition, competitor, and take part in. Besides, they also have to learn to summarize and retell a passage.
B. Ability objectives
Since the main objective of reading course is to improve the students’ reading ability, well, in this class, I will encourage and help them to read, think and find out information by themselves most time. They will learn to identify the general idea in the fast reading and try to gather the information in the intensive reading. In the other word, the whole class is for students to develop their reading skills as scanning, skimming, predicting and guessing the new words from the context.
C. Moral objectives
The reading passage is about Olympic games. As we know, the 29th Olympic games will be held in Beijing in 2008. So I will make full use of the topic and make them have a discussion to develop the students’ love of sports and cultivate t heir pride in motherland’s success in the competition of holding the Olympic game in 2008.
Teaching methods and studying ways
Now let’s focus on ways of teaching and learning.
Generally speaking, I will let my students be the real master of the class. They will learn through independent reading and discussion.
On the other hand, I will use a tape recorder and computer assistant instruments as my teaching aids.
Teaching procedure
Here comes another part, my teaching procedure. According to the schema theory, reading comprehension is an interactive process between the readers’ background knowledge and the text, or between new information and the old knowledge store. So in order to improve the students’ reading speed and reading comprehension, I will try my best to activate the students’ old knowledge store and more relevant background knowledge before I get the students to read. So my teaching procedure contains 4 steps: lead-in and new words presentation, reading, discussion and homework.
A. Lead-in and new words presentation
First, I’d like to show my students some pictures from their own sports meeting to arise their interest on sports and at the same time I will teach them some new words: athlete, compete, competition and competitor. Then, I’ll show them another picture of the Olympic flag, and explain them what the five colors stand for to fulfill their background knowledge and in the meantime lead to the topic of this lesson——Olympic games.
B. Reading
Reading is the main part of the class. Here I adopt the up-down reading model. Students are asked to get the general idea first, then down to some details. The step can be divided into two parts: fast reading and intensive reading.
a) Fast reading
During fast reading, I’ll ask students to go through the text twice. At the first time, I’d like them to listen to the tape without looking at the text and then draw the main idea. At the second time, I’ll ask t hem to read the whole passage again and t hen divide it into three parts.
Through this step, students will gradually improve their abilities of analyzing and summarizing the passage.
b) Intensive reading
From the last step we know that the whole passage can be divided into three parts. So here I’ll explain them one by one.
First of all, I’ll give them several minutes to look over the first two paragraphs. After that, I’d like them to do some T or F statements. I’ll pay much attention to the false one. If the statement is false, I’ll ask them to find the original sentence in the text and correct it.
Next comes the 3rd paragraph. After reading paragraph three, I’ll have them do some blank filling in the form of competition. I’ll invite two boys working together to complete the table on the blackboard. And then two girls will check the answers.
The last two paragraphs should be the most difficult but the most important part of this lesson. So I’ll remind my students to read them very carefully, and then answer several questions. I’ll not tell them the answers directly but guide them to get more exact one. Of course I’ll explain each question to help them make a full understanding.
That’s what I want to do in the reading part. All t he exercises I have listed on the screen should be very helpful in their retelling. While doing the intensive reading, well, I’ll add some extracurricular knowledge about Olympic games or sports if it is necessary.
C. Discussion
As we know, the 29th Olympic games will be held in Beijing in 2008. Many Chinese are very proud of it, so are the students. They must have a lot of things to say, so I adopt this discussion part to give them a chance to express their own ideas. I’ll list several questions on the screen in order to open and enlighten them how to deal with this topic. I will suggest them to form a group of four. One takes notes and one prepares to report. In the end, I’ll ask two or three groups to do the report in front of the class.
D. Homework
Appropriate homework will be very necessary to consolidate the new knowledge they have learned. In this lesson, I’d like my students to write a composition on the topic——the Olympic games. I will give them some situations. If the time is permitted, I will choose one as a model and tell them how to deal with it.
Blackboard work
The Olympic games
Time Place Country Number Competitor Number
1896 Greece 13 311
1992 Barcelona More than 150 Over 8000
At last, I’d like to show my blackboard design. I’ll use this table in the intensive reading. With the help of this table, students will know the time and place more exactly.
