Lesson Plan Presentation
Good morning! Everyone! It’s my honor to present my lesson here. You see (show the material), the material is from Unit 2, Module 1, NSEFC, the Reading part. The title of the passage is The Road to Modern English. The topic of the passage is English language, its development and different kinds of English. This passage talks about the development of English, from old English to Modern English. I put Para.1 and Para.5 together, because both of them talk about the spreading of English in the world. Para.3 and Para.4 are put together, for both talk about the development of English in time order. As we know, though our students have learned English for several years, they are still lack the background knowledge of English, such as the development of English, why English changed over time, etc. What’s more, most students can not use different kinds of reading skills to understand the text freely. Because of what have been mentioned, the anticipated difficulties are to use different reading skills to understand the text accurately and to know the development of English.
As we know, the current theory views reading as an interactive process. This process does not only involve the printed page but also the readers’ general knowledge of the world and of the language. During the process of reading, all these factors interact with each other and compensate for each other.
Based on the understanding of reading as an interactive process, an interactive model of teaching reading is adopted. What’s more, I will also adopt the three-stage model. The three stages are pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading. Multimedia devices and PPT documents will be used as my teaching aids.
According to the analysis of the teaching material, the learning condition, and the theory of teaching reading, by the end of the lesson, the following learning objectives are to be achieved.
Firstly, language skills Ss can predict the content of the text according to the title and scan for the countries which speak English.
Secondly, linguistic knowledge Ss can know the meaning of some language points, such as, rule, at present, be based on and the sentence “only time will tell”, etc. Ss can know the development of English and the reasons why English has changed over time. What’s more, Ss also can know the difference between American and British English in spelling and know what first, second and foreign language mean.
Thirdly, affects Ss can consider a language with an approach of development instead of a static one.
Fourthly, learning strategies Ss can communicate with others in English politely and fluently.
Lastly, cultural awareness Ss can know that the difference between British English and American English will not prevent a good communication. They can also know other languages’ influences on English vocabulary and some basic knowledge about the UK’s colonizing.
In order to achieve the learning objectives, several activities are designed for the three stages. The teaching procedures are as follows:
In the pre-reading stage, I designed three activities, they will cost 9mins. activity one is guessing game—Ss look at a picture of a language and guess which kind of language it belongs to. And then guess the meanings of some sentences which are written in old English. It aims at arousing Ss’ interest. Activity 2 is predicting. Ss guess the meaning of the word “road” in the title, which means development. And then predict the content of the passage. Activity 3 is answering questions. Q1:How many people are speaking English? Q2:How many countries use English as the official language? Compared these figures with those in para.1, Ss will get to know the wide spread usage of English in the world.
While-reading stage will cost 26mins. For para.1 and 5, which tell English becomes more and more widely used, I designed scanning: scan for the countries which speak English and answer the questions: When did English begin to be spoken in many other countries? Why? During these activities, Ss will also learn some basic knowledge about the UK’s colonizing and the differences between first, second and foreign language. What’s more, there is a matching activity: match the words with their origins. Through it, Ss will know something about other languages’ influences on English vocabulary. For para.3 and para.4, which tell the development of English in time order, I designed a table for Ss to fill in. It can help Ss understand the paragraph logically, which will lessen Ss’ learning difficulty. During this activity, the language points, such as at present, rule, be based on will be dealt with. What’s more, background knowledge about Shakespeare and Noah Webster will also be learnt. They can help Ss better understand the text. For para.2, the activity finding the synonyms was designed. It aims at getting the Ss know that the difference between British English and American English will not prevent a good communication.
I designed retelling for post-reading stage. It will cost 9mins. For arousing Ss’ interest, I’ll give a situation: suppose you are an expert specialized in English, now you’ll give a lecture to introduce the development of it. The outline of the passage will be given to lessen Ss’ difficulty.
Homework for this lesson is to learn more about English language and UK history and discuss whether the globalization will kill the language diversity. At last, it’s my blackboard design. On the right, they are the key language points. In the middle, it’s the outline of the passage.
That’s all for my presentation, thanks for your attention!
