Unit 9 Day and Night—A Happy Day

Ⅰ.Analysis of teaching materials
This is a passage about Ann and Ken’s daily lives and activities. It is from the third class of Unit 9 in Pioneer English Grade Four. The topic is A Happy Day.
Ⅱ.Analysis of students’ learning situation
It is difficult for students to understand the meaning of passages in Grade 4 in our school. I often use some pictures or body language to help them, but they can only talk about some simple topics.
Ⅲ.Teaching aims
(A) Aims on knowledge:
1.Review and consolidate vocabulary and phrases
2. Communication: have the children communicate by asking and answering questions
3. Extension: have the children describe their daily lives by themselves
(B) Aims on the abilities:
1. To train the students’ listening and speaking abilities
2. Have the children understand the meaning of the passage by themselves
3. Have the children read the passage independently
(C)Emotion aims:
1.To train the students a good habit of health life
2. To train the students’ ability of cooperation

1. Have the children ask and answer questions about time
2.Copy the passage and describe their daily lives

Step 1: Revision and Lead-in
1. Review vocabulary and phrases: breakfast, lunch, dinner, eat
lunch, get up, go to school etc.
2. Review structures: Have children answer my questions:
E.g. when do you get up? → I get up at 6:30.
When do you eat breakfast? → I eat breakfast at 7:00.
3. Lead-in: How about Ann and Ken? What do they do on Sunday? Do you want to know when they get up / eat breakfast? Now let’s read the passage A Happy Day.
(My design: I think the children have entered the natural state of learning English after this step.)
Step 2: Presentation and Consolidation
1. Have the children read the passage freely by themselves.
2. Have the children understand the meaning of the passage with questions:
Q1: When do Ann and Ken eat breakfast?
Q2: When do they go swimming?
Q3: When do they get home?
3. Have the children read the passage sentence by sentence after me.
4. Listen and do the actions
Action1: Have the children circle the verb phrases and time phrases;
Action2: Have the children draw the clock.
5. Feed back: Answer my questions.
(My design: I want the children to understand the meaning of the passage clearly. I hope that they can read the passage by themselves, and answer my questions when they gain more information from the passage in this step.)
Step 3: Extension
1. Have the children discuss their daily lives in groups.
2. Work in pairs.
3. Feed back: Ask one child to talk about his or her own daily life.
(My design: I think extended training will help these children to improve their reading ability, and lay the foundation for writing.)

Ⅷ.Reflections on teaching
1. In this class, I think the students only gain a little English information, it is not enough. I should give them more passages
in a lesson in the future and help them to improve their reading ability.
2. I think in this class, it is successful to have children ask and answer questions, describe their daily lives and so on. The students can improve their reading and writing ability by listening, speaking, reading and doing some exercises.
