Teaching contents: Reading and vocabulary
I.Teaching goals:
Knowledge goals
a. Important words and expressions
aggressive, make a deal, gesture, greet, on guard, formal, informal, position, trust, unconscious, weapon, be busy doing, give away, etc.
b. Important sentence patterns
l        If you say the word “communication”, most people think of words and sentences.
l        Although these are very important, we communicate with more than just…
l        Indeed, body positions are part of what we call “body language”.
l        Like other animals, we are on guard until we know it is safe to relax.
Ability goals
(1) To improve the Ss’ reading ability.
(2) To train the Ss’ ability of working in groups.
(3) To develop Ss’ abilities of communication and innovation.
Affection and attitudes
i. Develop the Ss’ love for the language culture.
ii. Cultivate the students’awareness of good cooperation and proper
competition.
II. Teaching Important Points:
1. Enable the Ss to learn some important words and expressions used to describe the greetings of body language.
2. Train the students’ reading ability and help them master some basic reading skills( such as guessing, skimming, scanning and summarizing).
3. Develop Ss’ interest in English.
III. Teaching Difficult Points:
How to improve the students’ reading ability and to help them
describe the greetings of body language.
IV. Teaching methods
Task-based Approach (i.e learning by doing ) ,Audio-visual Approach, Communicative Approach, etc.
Teaching aids: multi-media.
V. Teaching procedures
Step I Lead-in
Show pictures to discuss the greetings of body language in our daily life.
Purpose: To activate Ss and arouse their interest in talking about the greetings of body language.
Step II  Pre-reading
Task 1:  Prediction
Present the picture printed on the text page and let Ss guess the title they will learn.
Purpose: The pre-reading prepares Ss for the passage and relates their own experience to the subject.
Task 2: Word study

weapon, greet, informal, gesture

1.You can ______ someone by saying “Hello”.
2. Gun and knives are two different types of ________.
3. A(n) ________ is a movement of the body to communicate something.
4.“Give me five!” is a(n) ________ greeting.
Purpose: Learn some important words so as to help Ss eliminate the language barriers before reading.
Step III While-reading
Task 3: Skimming
Let Ss skim the passage and then match the main idea with each paragraph.

Task 4: Scanning
Ask Ss to scan the text and do the following activities by using competitions.
Part One: finish Activity 2 on page 23.

(For boys)
1. Not all body language is conscious.
3. In Asia, people touch strangers when they meet.
5. A “high five” is a(n) formal gesture.
(For girls)
2. Europeans shake hands with their left hand.
4. In the US “a high five” is a way of saying hello.

Purpose: Develop the Ss’ reading skill of scanning to get more detailed information through co-operation and competition, and meanwhile lay a foundation for them to summarize the main idea of the text.
(Divide the Ss into 2 groups. The student who can answer the question correctly will get one point for his/ her group. And the group which gets the most points is the winner. Only through co-operation can the Ss taste the joy of success. As a result, they’ll surely become more confident in learning English.)
Step IV Post-reading
Task 5: Let Ss listen to the important paragraphs in the text(book closed)and complete the passage with some words missed.
Every culture has developed a formal way to greet strangers.

Step V Consolidation
Task 6: Super Quiz
Let Ss choose freely to imitate(模仿) the ways of greeting of different people, such as Europeans, Chinese, Muslims, Hindus, American youths.
Purpose: Help Ss put what they have learned into practice to check the Ss’mastering of the knowledge.
Task 7: Free talk
Title: Is it important to know body language in different cultures? Why?
Requirement: students in groups of four make the dialogue. 
Purpose: Develop Ss’abilities of communication and innovation, and let them taste the joy of sharing.
 
Step VI Sum-up
Task 8: Let the Ss sum up what they have learned in this class.
Purpose: Train the Ss’ ability of summarizing knowledge.
Step VII Homework
1.       Surf the Internet to get more information about body language.
2.       Write a summary of the text.
