Teaching contents: cultural corner and writing
I.Teaching goals:
i. To help Ss consolidate some important words, expressions and sentence patterns.
ii. To enable Ss to get some information about Noah Webster who made American English simple.
iii. To deal with the writing about the Chinese language.
II. Teaching Key Points:
1. To enable Ss to master some important words and expressions.
2. To train the students’ reading and writing ability.
3. Develop Ss’ interest in English.
III. Teaching Difficult Points:
How to improve Ss’ reading and writing ability and to help them describe the Chinese language.
IV. Teaching methods
Task-based Approach (i.e learning by doing ) ,Audio-visual Approach, Communicative Approach, etc.
Teaching aids: multi-media.
V. Teaching procedures
Step I Lead-in
Purpose: To activate Ss and arouse their interest in talking about the spelling differences between American English and British English.
Show the spelling differences between American English and British English and ask Ss to talk about it.
Step II Pre-reading
Task 1: Guessing
Purpose: The pre-reading prepares Ss for the passage and relates their own experience to the subject.
Let Ss guess: 1.Who was the man making spelling simple? 2. How much do you know about him?
Task 2: Listening
Purpose: Train Ss’listening ability and help them relate their own experience to the subject.
Listen to the tape to check whether the students’guessing is right or not, and fill the profile of Noah Webster.

Step III While-reading
Task 3: Skimming
Purpose: Develop the Ss’ reading skill of skimming to get the main points of the passage.
Let Ss skim the passage and choose the main topics.
1. The life of Webster.
2. How to use Webster’s first book.
3. Simplifying the spelling of English words.
4. Webster’s dictionary.
Task 4: Scanning
Purpose: Develop the Ss’ reading skill of scanning to get more detailed information through co-operation and competition.
Ask Ss to scan the text and do the following activities by using competitions.
Part One: True or False.
(For boys)
1. In English the spelling of words always represent the sound.
3. By the 1850s, the Elementary Spelling Book had sold one million copies altogether.
(For girls)
2. Webster felt that written English in the United States should have a distinctive“British”look.
4. Today, American Dictionary of the English Language is the number one dictionary for American students.
Part Two: Answer questions.
(For girls:1-3;for boys:2-4 )
1. What was Noah Webster?
2. What reasons did Webster have for writing an American dictionary?
3. Were all his suggestions adopted?
4. Can you see any similarities between Webster’s work and attempts to simplify Chinese?
Step IV Activity
Purpose: As American English becomes simpler, the Chinese language experiences from complex to simple. The teacher designs this activity to develop Ss’abilities of communication and innovation, and lays a foundation for them to write the passage about the Chinese language.
Task 5: Interview
Imagine a foreign reporter from VOA is going to interview Chinese students about the Chinese language, with the following topics:
1.The writing system of Chinese characters.
2.The development of Chinese characters.
3.The language today.
Task 6: Writing tips:
1. The writing system /about 50,000 characters/most people know about 20,000/most characters have elements of meaning and information about pronunciation.
2. The development of Chinese characters /originally pictures of people, animals or other things /become simplified.
3. The language today /become more important in the world.
Step V Homework
1. Write a passage about the Chinese language in 80-100 words.
2. Surf the Internet to find more information about Noah Webster.
