Part 1 Analysis of the teaching material
(一) the Status and Function of the teaching material
This unit is in the second module of the students’book 8B—Rights and responsibilities. The topic of this unit is to talk about a charity walk.In the last sections students have learned something about the charity walk—They have known a fund-raising charity walk,Oxfam Trailwalker; They have learned some important sentence patterns; They have listened to a radio programme about a charity walk to South Hill. All of these are for “main task”—Make a flow chart and create your own web page. Main task reflects the finnal outcome of this unit and is the climax of each unit. It can develop the students’ various language skills and the abilities to make comprehensive use of language.
(二) .Teaching goals
1. Knowledge goals
1).To complete a flow chart.
2).To complete a web page article about a charity event.
2. Ability goals
1).To order ideas using a flow chart.
2).To develop the Ss’ ability of using English to express themselves.
3). To cultivate the Ss’ ability of writing.
3. Moral goals
1). To enable Ss to express themselves without getting shy.
2). To enable Ss to know what we can do to help people in need and build a society in harmony with others
(三).Teaching focus and difficulties
1. To make a flow chart and use it to create a web page article about a charity event.
2. How to make a web page article effective and interesting.
(四). Teaching aids
In this lesson, I’ll use multi-media computer and power point to help me and arouse the Ss’ interest in learning English.
Part 2. Teaching methods
As we all know ,the main instructional aims of learning English in the middle school is to cultivate Ss’ basic skills of listening, speaking, reading , writing and their good sense of the English language. So in this class, I’ll adopt the task-based teaching method, Communicative teaching method and other teaching methods as well. Ask Ss to search for some information about a charity event on the Internet. This can make writing easy and interesting. Then ask Ss to have a discussion about how to creative a web page article. The purpose is to let Ss finish the task in a light way.
Part 3. Studying ways
Before class , I’ll ask Ss to search for some information about the charity event. They can search the Internet or read magazines. They can work in groups or by themselves. In class, Ss exchange their information and they can get more information by co-operation and communication.
Part 4 Teaching procedures
Step 1. Revision
First, I’ll revise the Reading,Vocabulary and Grammar with them. This can build the foundation for writing.
Step 2. Tasks
According to the demands of English Curriculum Standard, I divide the process of English writing into three steps for the students
Task 1. Show the task. (leading in)
Tell the Ss that we are going to organize a charity event to raise enough money for the poor. We need to design a web page to advertise the event.
(Purpose of designing: In order to arouse Ss’ interest in writing, the teacher must tell Ss what they will do and why they will do)
Task 2. read and complete the sample script. (pre-task)
Of course, in order to write articles well, Ss must read more examples, conjecture the way to write. Before writing the articie, let Ss read the flow chart on page 105.
First ,Tell the Ss that a flow chart should contain some important items:
l Name of the event
l Name of the organization
l Aim of the event
l Details of the event
l Application
l Collection of funds
l Certificates for the event
l Contact
Then, have Ss complete the writing according to the flow chart.
Afterwards, ask several Ss to read their completed answers and have Ss check them.
Finally, ask them to comment on whethervthe web page is effective
(Purpose of designing: In order to make our advertisements interesting and effective,it’s necessary to know how to write an advertisement.
Reading examples is very purposeful. It is to learn the structure of the article. It is also a preparation for writing by themselves.)
Task 3. write a draft. (while-task)
First,collect information
Before writing their own articles, Ss can take out their information about the charity event on the Internet or from books and magazines.
Second,look up
Divide the whole class into some groups--- a group of three or four. In the same group, they shoud share their information with others. They can also have a discussion about the information they got and decide whether they are effective and impressive. Remind them that their charity event doesn’t have to be a walk. They can plan any type of charity event they like, such as a fun fair, charity show, bicycle ride, etc. Encourage Ss to come up with other ideas. Remind them that all the important items must be contained, e.g.,
l The name of the event,
l What type of event it is,
l When it will be held(date and time),
l Why it is held,
l Where it will be held,
l Who is organizing the event,
l Who can participate, etc.
and any other relevant information. Write the key points on the Bb for Ss’ reference.
Third, organize the information
First, tell Ss to make their flow chart.
Then, according to the flow chart, Ss write their own web page.
In these two steps, I’m as a mentor and look around. When Ss have some problems or need some new phases and sentences,I will help them. When Ss can’t organize their information well or mixed up the information. I will correct their mistakes.
(Purpose of designing:In this way, I will give Ss a chance to show their abilities. The ability of co-operation and communication will be well-trained and the students’ capability of autonomous learning is strengthened.)
Task 4. display their works. (post-task)
First, I’ll ask Ss to read their drafts to each other so that they can check their works.
Then,I’ll ask several Ss to read their writing in front of the class. Let other Ss to enjoy their writing.
Finally, have the Ss talk about the works they have heard. Ask Ss whether their works are effective and interesting. Let Ss know how to comment their writings.( remind Ss that their web page will be a form of advertising and that it should try to persuade people to join the event and make money for their chosen charity.)
(Purpose of designing: Teenagers have the strong desire to show their works in front of their class. I’ll give them the chance to show themselves. It can arouse their interest in writing.)
Homework
Have Ss copy their works correctly and neatly. If possible they can add some photographs or drawings to make their works typical and wonderful. The works must be full of imagination. Then hand them in to me. I’ll show them in class or put them up on the wall of the classroom.
Board design:
Name of the event
Name of the organization
Aim of the event
Details of the event
Application
Collection of funds
Certificates for the event
Contact
