Lesson Plan Presentation
Hello, Everyone! It’s my great honor to present my lesson here. The type of this lesson is reading for writing, and its material is Using Language part from PEP NSEFC Module 3 Unit 4. The title of its reading part is A Visit to The Moon. The passage talks about a visit to the moon and problems mainly caused by the changes of gravity during the travel. And the main task of this lesson is to write an expositive essay after reading.
The learners are Senior High School students in Grade one. They are very imaginative and curious about the topic of space travel. They have achieved certain level of English language, so they are supposed to have few problems in understanding the text, using some basic reading skills to obtain information, and sharing opinions with others. However, few of them have had experience of expositive essay writing.
Based on the analyses of the teaching material and the learning condition, I’d like to propose the following teaching objectives.
Firstly, Language skills
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use predicting,skimming, and scanning more proficiently. They can organize useful information and imitate the given form of expositive essay to compose one. And they can assess their works by following certain standards.
Secondly, Linguistic knowledge
Ss can know and use the words and phrases such as float, mass, don't forget to, pay attention to give instructions. They can share knowledge about space travel with peers and put forward solutions to problems during space travel.
Next, Affects Ss will be able to experience the pleasure of solving problems by teamwork.
Fourthly, Cultural awareness
They can know the English expression of the names of some stars, such as Venus, Mars and so on.
The last is learning strategy
Ss can collect information through brainstorming, group discussion and other activities.
In accordance with my analyses of the teaching material, learning condition and teaching objectives, I’d like to move on to the language focus and anticipated difficulty of this lesson.
The Language focus is that Ss will be able to use reading strategies more proficiently to get knowledge about the changes of gravity. They should also learn to write a short expositive essay after reading. But some difficulty may exist for it is the first time for them to write an expositive essay and therefore a discussion would be organized and a sample of expositive essay would be provided to lessen their difficulties.
As for the teaching method, I will adopt—Three-Stage and Seven-Step Reading-Writing Teaching Mode first put forward by Professor Luo Xiaojie in 2003. The three stages are reading, speaking, and writing. The seven steps are lead-in, pre-reading, fast-reading, post-reading, writing preparation, draft writing and writing assessment. This teaching mode makes writing a reading-based process with speaking activities.
In order to help my students better understand the passage, I will use multimedia devices and PPT documents to bring the real life situations to the class.
Next let’s move to the most important part of my lesson plan presentation, that is the teaching procedure. Generally speaking, I’m going to finish my class in 7 steps in 45 minutes.
The first step is lead-in activity. The topic of this lesson is introduced with a discussion of a photo taken from the spaceship. Meanwhile, key words of the following reading material, such as float, mass and gravity are presented vividly by interesting photos.
Following the lead-in step, Step2 pre-reading gives students a task to predict the main idea of the reading material according to the given picture and title, and get students better prepared for the coming skimming and scanning.
Next, I designed two activities for Step3, the first one is skimming activity, Ss skim the passage, choose its main idea and then find out three changes of gravity during the space journey. In the activity 2, students scan the passage and match the information for corresponding parts according to the travel route. This step helps students obtain information from the reading material to make preparation for writing.
The 4th step is a discussing activity. I tell Ss that I have a plan of making a space travel in the future so students should discuss what problems I might meet, and find out solutions. Words and expressions, useful in the coming expositive essay writing, such as “Don’t forget to” “You’d better” and so on are listed for students’ reference. This step not only furthers the learning of reading material, but also helps Ss activate their knowledge about gravity through their cooperative work. Words and expressions, writing material, and writing structure are prepared for the following writing.
Step 5 is the Preparation for writing. The students could complete a short expositive essay with existing information. This essay itself also provides the students with an expositive writing model to lower their difficulties.
After having these former 5 steps, the students are motivated and inspired enough to write, and they have also knew the standard structure of an expositive essay. The 6th step----writing---- serves as the crucial output of this class.
Suppose they are going to have a space travel in the future, students would write an article explaining one of the problems they might face during the journey. They are advised to write in 3 paragraphs.
Para1: Explain the star you want to go and one of the problems you might face during the journey.
Para2: Explain the cause of your problem.
Para3: Set out the possible solution to your problem and explain how it would solve the problem.
The last step is evaluating. Here I show students a standardized evaluating chart. The students would work in peers and assess their work mutually with teacher's guidance.
Lastly the homework of lesson is: Revise your works and make a second draft.
