 Good morning, Ladies and gentlemen! It’s my great pleasure to be here sharing my lesson with you. The content of my lesson is Book 6 Module 2 My favourite things Unit6 Food and drinks.
First, let me talk about the teaching material.
Part 1 Teaching material
This unit refers to the topic of ‘picnic’. There are six parts in this unit, and I will finish the teaching in four lessons. This is the second lesson. After learning all kinds of food in first lesson, we’ll learn the text in Part 1.
Therefore, the teaching aims are as follow:
1. Review the words of food and drinks. The Ss can ask and answer with the main sentence pattern ‘what do you have?’ ‘I have some …and…’
2. Be able to read the text correctly.
3. Improve the students’ ability of language communication by completing the task, and increase their interest in English learning.
Next, the key points of the teaching:
Master the main sentence pattern and be able to ask and answer with it.
The difficult points:
1. Lead the students say several food at one time by using the conjunction ‘and’.
2. The Ss can use the words and sentence pattern to make a simple dialogue about picnic.
Secondly, teach the Ss how to study independently as well as by cooperation.
Well, how to achieve the teaching aims better and break through the difficult points? The key is using proper teaching methods.
Part 2 Teaching methods
According to the modern perception theories, I’ll use the TSA (Total Situational action) and TBLT (Task-based Language Teaching) methods in my teaching.
The former can establish a real scene and interaction between the teacher and Ss. The latter offers the children an opportunity to use English in a real-life situation.
As we know, ‘Interest is the best teacher’. In order to arouse Ss’ enthusiasm and participation in my class, I will use all kinds of teaching means, pictures, games, competitions, modern electricity teaching equipments… The more the children engaged, the better they learn.
Part 3: Learning methods:
Let Ss learn English in a relaxed and pleasing atmosphere. Meanwhile, for the kids in Grade 3, the teacher should not only teach them how to read the words and sentences, but also develop the Ss’ abilities of independent learning and oral communication.
Part 4: Teaching process:
I’ll divide the teaching process into five steps:
Step 1 Lead-in:
First, talk about weather and create a real situation of picnic at the very beginning. Draw a big picture of a blanket on the grass on Bb and declare there will be a competition between boys and girls. Let’s see, which team can get more ice-creams? So the students will immediately notice the topic of this lesson and keen to take part in the competition.
Step 2 Presentation:
1. Show the picture in part 1 on screen. Ask students to look and find out the food they can see. I stick them on the blanket and review them. Apples, biscuits, bread, water, juice…
2. Teach the new words ‘some’. Show them some pictures of food, Encourage students to say phrases like this. For example, some eggs, some bananas, some juice…
3. Then, listen to the tape and repeat the sentences they heard. It’s a good way of listening practice for grade 3 kids. Maybe the kids will repeat a word, some words or a complete sentence. I will write the key sentence pattern on Bb. (板书) then teach them the sentences and practice in different ways, read after me, read row by row… You see, I only wrote ‘I have some …’ because I will replace food pictures here and ask students to complete the answer. It’s a higher level of practice, which can benefit their development of language learning. And the way I show the pictures is well-designed, first only one type of food, then two types of food even three or four different types, therefore, the students have to learn how to use ‘and’ to say a long sentence like this: I have some …, some … and some … when the students say perfect long sentences with ‘some, and’, they will get ice-cream as awards.
If the students can master the sentence pattern well, I will ask them more questions: What do you have on your desk? What do you have in your bag?
4. Now it’s time to listen to the tape again and repeat.
5. Role play. Children always like role play activity. So I will ask boys to be Peter and Joe, girls to be Kitty and Alice, and I will be Miss Fang and read the text together.
Step 3 Consolidation and extension
You might notice that I put some words in each of the students’ desk. It’s a surprise for the children, because I will invite them to join the picnic after learning the text. They are some food and drinks on the paper. Now I will let the children take out the paper. I guess they must be very curious what food they’ve got. So I’ll let them ask and answer each other: what do you have? I have some …
Step 4 Task time
The name of the task is ‘Let’s have a picnic!’ The whole class will be divided into eight groups. The students take their food, gather together and share the food with others. I will show them main sentences on screen and make an example like this first:
A: Fangfang, let’s have a picinic.
B: Great. What do you have?
A: I have some… and … what do you have?
C: I have …
Then, I’ll ask some students to performance in front of the class, assess their performance and give them more stickers of ice-cream. Then make a conclusion at the end of the lesson.
Step 5 Blackboard design.
As for the blackboard design, I have already shown it here. Above is the lecture note of my lesson. I think the best part of my teaching design is I used the Total Situational action teaching methods during the whole lesson.
