Teaching contents: cultural corner and writing
I.Teaching goals:
i. To help Ss consolidate some important words, expressions and sentence patterns.
ii. To enable Ss to get some information about The Lord of the Rings《指环王》.
iii. To deal with the writing about the short descriptions of books.
II. Teaching Key Points:
1. To enable Ss to master some important words and expressions.
2. To train the students’ abilities of reading, writing and telling the story.
3. Develop Ss’ interest in English.
III. Teaching Difficult Points:
How to improve Ss’ reading and writing ability and to help them learn how to organize short descriptions of books.
IV. Teaching methods
Task-based Approach (i.e learning by doing ) ,Audio-visual Approach, Communicative Approach, etc.

V. Teaching procedures
Step I Lead-in
Purpose: To activate Ss and arouse their interest in talking about the fantasy story--- The Lord of the Ringss.
T: Boys and girls, would you like to live a good life in future?
Ss: yes.
T: I’ve heard there is a ring, a magical ring, which has great power. If you own it, the ring can make you realize any dream. Do you know what is the ring?
Ss: The Lord of the Rings.
T: The Lord of the Rings was written by J.R.R.Tolkien. This book has three parts. All the three parts have been made into successful films. Would you want to know more about the films?
Step II Pre-reading
Task 1: Introduction
Purpose: The pre-reading prepares Ss for the passage and relates their own experience to the subject.
Let Ss have a general idea of the trilogy, and main characters in the books.
Task 2: Word study
Purpose: Learn some important words so as to help Ss eliminate the language barriers before reading.

Step III While-reading
Task 1: skimming
Purpose: Develop the Ss’ reading skill of skimming to get the main idea of the passage.
Skim the passage and match the main idea with each part.

Task 2: Scanning
Purpose: Develop the Ss’ reading skill of scanning to get more detailed
information through co-operation and competition, and meanwhile lay a foundation for them to summarize the main idea of the text.

Surf the Internet to find more information about the film.
