Unit 8 Sports
---The First Period
Good afternoon , ladies and gentlemen . My name is , from . It is my great honor to interpret my lesson here and the lesson plan I want to talk about is from SEFC Book 1A , the first period of Unit 8 Sports . To make my presentation much clearer , I’ll explain it in the following 5 aspects :

I .My teaching principles
Because this period of lesson combines listening teaching with speaking teaching , it just meets the requirement of the New Curriculum . Especially the oral teaching , it is the key issue for middle school English teachers . We should concern about how to create and present good situations with suitable topics for practicing and learning . So in such a teaching case , the governing guideline is to activate the Ss to talk in English by providing them with live situations . The main feature is to combine speaking with listening , observing , reading and writing . The good point in doing this is that Ss will know not only how to speak but also what to speak about .
II. My understanding of the teaching material
In my understanding of the teaching material , there are 3 parts : teaching aims and demands , the important functional items and also the difficult point . But they are not separate . For this lesson is a listening and speaking course ,its purpose is to improve the students’ listening ability as well as to help them grasp some useful expressions in talking about interests and hobbies .
All these tasks will be done in order that students can get a good preparation for the next reading course. So I’d like to divide this lesson’s objectives into three categories :
①. Knowledge Objective
Students should know some background information about the Olympic Games , some names of sports and also grasp the useful expressions when talking about sports , such as What’s your favorite sport ? Are you interested in … , I prefer A to B and so on. .
②. Ability Objective
Students’ listening and speaking ability should be trained . Thus , in my class , I’ll play 3 pieces of English sports reports to them for doing some exercises , and teach them a few listening skills . Besides , in order to cultivate their ability of discussion , dialogue and even performing . Students should be asked to talk freely in English with partners by using the expressions and then act their dialogues out .
③. Moral Objective
Unit 8 is a unit about sports . As we know , sports can make us healthy and strong . Therefore , I’ll cultivate the students to love sports . On the other hand , through the discussion ,dialogue and acting , the students are enabled to understand the importance of unity , cooperation , friendship and love between human beings .
III . Teaching methods and learning ways
Then , let’s come to the teaching methods and learning ways . In my class , I’ll take advantage of the situational method and “ 3P” teaching method , that is “ present ” “practice” “production” . Besides , I’ll use a tape recorder , a projector , some pictures and slides as my teaching aids .
IV Teaching Procedure
Now , I’d like to talk about my teaching procedure . I want to carry it out in the following steps : Step 1 lead-in ; step 2 listening ; step 3 speaking ; step 4 consolidation ; step 5 homework
Step 1 Lead-in ( 6 minutes )
I’ll first tell the students that I had got a cold , and let them give me their advice on how to keep strong and healthy . It may smoothly lead to the main topic of this unit – sports . Then , I want to show them three pictures of sports and invite several students to answer my questions about these pictures . I’ll use the expressions in the text on purpose . At last , students are asked to do a quiz in their books and I can see how much they really know the Olympic Games . It is advisable to praise those students who get high marks .
Step 2 listening (10 minutes)
Firstly , I’d like to explain some new words which will appear in the listening material . Then students are required to listen to three pieces of English sports news and fill the blanks on their books . They can have a discussion when they come across some difficulty . After I ask them to give me their answers one by one , this part is naturally finished . But I still intend to give them some advice on how to improve the listening ability , such as listening to VOA and BBC English News , or watching CCTV 9 .
Step 3 speaking ( 22 minutes )
In my opinion , as speaking is the most important section of my lesson ,it should be paid more attention to . So at this stage , I adopt the “ 3P ” and situational method . First of all , I’ll present some useful expressions on the slides and allow the students a few minutes to read them to have enough input . After they finish reading , I’d like to encourage them to raise their questions in understanding these expressions . If there is , I should explain to them clearly in time . The next thing I’ll do is to practice a half-controlled speaking activity . I’ll ask one student to talk with me and others should look and listen carefully . Here , I must play a leading role , so my questions are well designed to ensure that he/she can use those expressions spontaneously . Then , the whole class are divided into several groups . Suppose every group has a reporter and he is going to interview his partners about their hobbies and interests and take down some notes . Before they start , I’d like to remind and encourage them to use those expressions as much as possible . For this situation happens directly in our daily life , I’ll make students talk freely , so that they can get fully involved in the activity . After preparing for several minutes , they are asked to act their interview out and the reporter also need to read his notes to others .
Step 4 consolidation ( 6 minutes )
In this step , students should try their best to recall the useful expressions they have learned without looking at their books . Meanwhile , I will write them down on the blackboard and make them into a form .
Step 5 Homework ( 1 minute )
Oral competence is a good foundation to the development of writing ability . If the speaking practice is integrated with writing , the students will find it easy to write what they have spoken and eager to write them out . So I will tell the students to have free talks with their classmates after class , then write them out . If they’d like to hand in their dialogues , I’ll correct them carefully .
V Blackboard work
The last aspect of my lesson plan is the blackboard work . Here is a form about the useful expressions when talking about interests and hobbies as well as some possible answers . They should be listed clearly to draw students’ attention again .
