8B Unit8 Green Switzerland
Good afternoon, everyone. My name is. It’s a great honor to be here to share my ideas with you. It is the first period of Reading ‘Green Switzerland’ taken from Unit8, 8B. In the reading process, students are guided to be efficient readers. I will focus on students’ long-term development and enable them to use proper reading skills and strategies. There are five sections here.
Section1. Analysis of the teaching material and students.
1. Status and function
‘Reading’ plays an important role in English learning. Its aim is to cultivate and improve students reading comprehension, and to communicate with others by using the information from Reading text. In this unit, it focus on a recent hot topic—energy conservation and environment protection. The up-to-date information is popular and close to students. So it can motivate students’ interest and get more students to be involved in.
2. The analysis of the students
It’s my duty to train Ss good habits of learning English, set up students’ confidence, develop self-learning and cooperation. Students in Grade 8 have accumulated certain amount of English vocabulary, and they have had their reading skills trained often. Ss will be interested in the green life and are eager to know how to be a environmental protection guard.
Section2. Identifying the teaching aims.
Based on the analysis of the teaching material and students, I have chosen the following as the aims of my lesson.
a. Knowledge aims: 1. To master the target vocabulary and general information of the text.
2. To help establish some efficient ways to protect the environment.
b. Abilities aims: 1. To improve the reading skills.
2. To get different ways of protecting the environment.
c. Moral aims: 1. To make students realize the close relationship between men’s behavior and environment protection
2. To regulate their own behavior and cultivate awareness of environmentally responsible.
Section3. Teaching importance and difficulties.
The new curriculum standards point out we teachers should help students to think actively and be bold in practice. I will focus on these aspects to cultivate Ss’ comprehensive language skills and form the ability of autonomous learning.
1. To help Ss understand the text by finishing related tasks.
2. To use the method of cooperative learning to solve problems.
3. To practice reading in each link.
Section4. Teaching strategies and methods
I have to raise different strategies to keep Ss’ freshness and excitement. I will use, (1) audio-visual teaching method. (2) task-based teaching method. (3) situational language teaching.
Section5. Teaching procedures.
Step1 Lead-in
1. Brainstorm. Show Ss a piece of green on the screen and ask Ss ‘What do you think of when you see the green?’ According to Ss’ various answers, lead to a green life.
Energy … Trees and flowers
New life
Green
Spring … Green life
2. I will go on asking ‘What type of lifestyle is green in your opinion?’ Pick several groups to share their ideas with us. Then write down the title ‘Green Switzerland’ on Bb.
Step2 Pre-reading
1. Predict. Ask Ss to predict what the passage mainly tells us about according to the title ‘Green Switzerland’.
2. New words teaching. Pick out some new words from the passage to make a short video. I will write down these new words on Bb while watching. After watching it, Ss will have a general impression of these new words and they can understand better.
3. Ask Ss to finish B1 on page 110 alone. Then check answers with group members. Invite Ss to read out the answers and try to use the complete sentences.
Step3 While-reading
1. We usually use skimming in extensive reading. First I will present a question ‘What day is World Environment Day?’ Then get Ss to watch the video of Green Switzerland with the question in their mind, Ss should read by themselves while watching. Finally, tell me the answer.
2. Scanning is another way in intensive reading. Divide the whole passage into several parts and try to speak out the main idea of each part with the help of B3 on page 111.
(1) Ss read paragraph 1 together while listening and a question follows. ‘Why does Martina love this country?’
(2) Read paragraph 2 in the same way, ask Ss to read again with their group members and help each other if necessary. After practicing reading, get Ss to complete a table and retell the information by joining them together.
(3) Read paragraph 3 and invite some groups to stand up and read for us. Ss can pick out which group reads best. Then get Ss to ask and answer in pairs.
(4) Read paragraph 4 and invite Ss to read one by one. Do some True or False to check Ss’ understanding of this paragraph.
(5) Read the last paragraph together and call on the protection of the environment.
Step4 Post-reading
1. Read again. Finish B2 on page 110. Ask some students to perform on the electronic whiteboard.
2. Fill in the blanks in B4 on page111 without looking at the passage to challenge Ss’ memory. Check answers in pairs and ask a pair to present the dialogue.
Step5 Extension
1. Play a game. There are four columns on screen: Recycle & Noncycle, Dos & Don’ts. Some words from the passage are written on the cards. Ss should pick out one of the cards and make sentences by using the words on the card, then stick the card on screen in the right column.
For example,
A: cut down trees We are not allowed to cut down trees. Otherwise, we will be punished. ( Then stick the card in the proper place)
2. Group work. Make a survey. Our Taicang is going to create a green city. Some volunteers are making a survey to get some ideas. Discuss with group members to list the ideas, then each group present their ideas.
3. Watch a short video: Nature and resources. Arouse Ss’ responsibility of protecting the environment, protecting our home.
Step7 Assignment
1. Practise reading fluently.
2. Get the ideas from the survey to write a short passage about protecting our hometown.
