Period Four Reading comprehension
Learning strategy: Using contest.
学习策略:利用上下文信息
尽量利用你不认识的词或短语周围的信息来帮你猜测意思。利用上下文可帮助你学习生词和短语。
One way to understand the meaning of a word that you don’t understand is to look it up in a dictionary. But another way is to read the sentence or sentences around it. Most of the time, doing this will enable you to understand the meaning of the word. In tests and examinations, you are not usually allowed to use a dictionary, so this method of using contest to understand something new is an excellent strategy towards the successful completion of a task.
Step1. Before reading.
This activity allows students to activate their background knowledge before reading. 这项活动让学生在阅读前激活他们的背景知识,为接下来阅读活动的顺利进行作好铺垫。
1.T: Liu Qing, a middle school student, didn’t use to study hard at school. He usually got bad grades. Luckily his father was very patient. He helped him to understand that it was important to do well at school. Now he is one of the top students in his class. Everyone has problems, when you have problems, are your parents there with you, are they patient and do they listen to your problems? If you feel your parents are like that, please hands up.
2. Pairwork. Tell your parents about a time your parents helped you with a problem. Make notes.
Step2. While reading.
1.T: Today we are going to meet a new friend. His name is Martin Murray. He used to be a naughty boy and cause a lot of trouble. But at the end, he changed. Read the passage, get the general understanding.
2. Reading once more. Predict what information might fit the blanks. Ask for a few ideas.
Step3. After reading.
