Lesson Plan Interpretation NSEFC Book1 Unit1 Good Friend Hello, everybody. Today I would like to stand here and interpret my lesson. The lesson plan I am going to talk about is from Senior English for China students Book1 Unit1 Good Friends. I will explain how to teach and why to do so from the following 4 aspects: understanding of the teaching material, teaching methods and study ways, teaching procedure, blackboard design and teaching expectation. Type of Lesson: Reading comprehension I. Understanding of the teaching material: First, I’d like to show my understanding of the teaching material including 3 parts: the status and the function, teaching objectives, the important and difficult points, At the very beginning, let’s focus on the first part. The text is mainly about how Chuck Noland lives in the deserted island and the friendship between him and Wilson. They are good friends. During living alone in the island, Chuck had learned and realized many things, like the important of friendship. It is not difficult for my students to understand the text, because maybe most of them have watched the movie Cast Away or heard the famous story, Robinson Crusoe, which is familiar with Cast Away, but there are some new phrases and sentences that maybe a little bit difficult. So before the student’s first reading, I will explain the new words and phrase briefly and after reading the whole passage, I will embody the usage of the news words and phrases ,and get the students understand the difficult sentences. That’s all for the first part, now let’s all for the first part, Now Let’s move to the second part. According to the teaching material and the new Curriculum of English, in order to fulfill the learning task of this lesson, I establish the following objectives: A).knowledge objective By the end of the lesson, Ss will have a better understanding of the meaning and structure of the text .Then Ss will grasp some useful words and expressions such as crash, deserted, survives, make fire, hunt for food, care about 、、、 B) Ability objectives Actually students should be encouraged to do speed reading in the first period of reading lesson. But the students in my class are lack of independent reading ability, especially summarizing ability. In this class, I will encourage and help them to read, think and find out information by themselves most time. Since the main objective if reading course is to improve the Ss’ reading ability. I’ll train their ability if identifying the general idea in the fast reading. And in intensive reading the ability of information-gathering and summarizing is developed. And the whole class is for Ss to develop their reading skills as scanning, skimming, information-gathering, summarizing and guessing the new words from the text. c) Moral objectives In the text, before the accident, Chuck is a person who always thinks about himself, not his friend. But after living in a deserted island for five years, he had learned a lot of things. He realized that a friendship is import for us. So from learning the text, my students know more about the importance of their friendship and learn how to be a good guy. Well, so much for the teaching objectives. Let’s come to deal with the third part: the important points and the difficult points. According to the national curriculum of English and language learning theory, when teaching reading, we should encourage Ss to do speed reading for the first time. That’ to say, we should encourage our Ss to reading as fast as they can when they do the first reading. So much emphasis should be put on reading skills and reading comprehension as well. So the important points are that how to make Ss grasp the new words and phrase and how to improves their reading skills as scanning, skimming, information-gathering and summarizing. As to do the difficult points, they are the same as the important ones III. Teaching methods and studying ways That’s my all understood of the teaching material. Now let’s focus on the ways of teaching and learning. General speaking, I adopt task-based language teaching and communicative approach in my class. As for reading, Ss will learn through independent reading, discussing and cooperating. I will use computer and blackboard as my teaching aids. IV. Teaching procedure Here comes to the most important part, the teaching procedure. It includes 5 steps: Step I: Lead-in (warm-up) Step II: pre-reading StepIII: while-reading StepIV: post-reading Step I Lead-in/warm up(2mins) Now let’s come to the first step. This step is just warming up, or greeting. It just takes 2mins to do the activity. The dialogue is also about friend too, which is related to the text. Step II. Pre-reading (13mins) Pre-reading takes 13mins, because there is two activities in this part. Every part will take much time to finish. In activity one, I design a scene that if my students live alone in a deserted island, which items will use PPT to show the possible items on the screen and some of them are new words. They take me some time to explain them. And after that, students are required to stand up to express their answer in this way: “ I think that ------------would be the most useful, because I would use it to ------------,to ___________,and to ------------” This activity leads into the brainstorming. In activity two, I will use PPT to show some picture about the movie Cast Away and explain every picture, this activity lead in while-reading. Step III: While-reading (20mins) While reading is the main part and it will take 20mins. Here I adopt the top-down reading model. This step is divided into 2parts: fast reading and careful reading. Before reading, I will ask the Ss to predict what will talk in the text according to the title. It can exert the Ss’ imagination. 1) Fast reading During fast reading, I will ask Ss to read the whole passage quickly and get the main idea of each paragraph. In the text, the main idea of each paragraph should be summarized this can train my students summarizing ability. 2) Careful reading After getting the general idea of each Para rage, I will deal with the details Para rage by paragraph. There are two questions for student to answer.
Step IV Post-reading (8mins) That’s all for the while-reading part. Now let’s move to the fourth step. In this step,I will design two activities and I will spend 8mins on them. The first activity is answering questions, two open question for my students to discussion. This activity can cultivate their imagination and the ability of using language. The second activity is retelling the story; this activity can consolidate what Ss had learned. Step V. Homework (2mins) Finally it comes to the homework’s are required to review the learnt text and try to remember the useful words and phrases in the text. And Ss should write down the story about the text in their own words Step VI: Blackboard design On the top, there is the title of this lesson. On the left, it lists some useful words and expressions. On the right, it is free for me and students for some classroom, exercises (maybe) Step VII. Teaching expectation I have made great effort in designing my lesson, but it is not perfect. And some questions would arise from my students, especially in open questions. To that questions, I will definite the right ones and collect some mistakes. And when I ask them to use some reading skills, they don’t know how to use them. I will give them some hints. In a word, I hope my lesson goes smoothly and lively! That’s all for my interpretation the lesson. Thank you for you listening!
