M2 Unit 1 Tales of the unexplained

一、 教材分析
1．学生情况分析
我教的高一学生基本都是十五、六岁的青少年，正处于求知识的阶段，对于一些现在科学还无法解释的前沿的科技现象有相当大的好奇心，对这样的话题很感兴趣也很乐意与大家一起分享并能发挥想象力作出种种猜测。
2．教材背景分析
牛津高中英语模块一包括三个单元，主要涉及科技方面，以故事体裁为主，话题先进、前沿，有助于学生拓宽视野。本节课通过地图和图片让学生开展讨论，逐步对本单元的知识进行了解和把握。
二、教学目标
1. 知识和能力目标
要求学生掌握一些有关不能解释的现象的专有名词：UFO, Yeti, Pyramids, Loch Ness Monster, ect.
开发学生的观察、想象、比较和分析等多种能力。
2. 情感和价值观
使学生能够增加视野，扩大知识范围，同时对科学的好奇心能激发他们内在的潜能去探索世界。
设计思想：
即使在现在的先进的科技下，还是存在许多用科学无法解释的现象，而这些现象不仅为科学家感兴趣，就算学生也同样充满好奇心。本节课主要是通过地图引入，激起学生的兴趣和对未知事物的好奇，从而达到本节课的目的。主要要让学生开口说英语，提高他们的口语和交际能力。
三、教学重点和难点
1.教学重点
Make the students free to talk in and after class about the tales of the unexplained.
2.教学难点
1）Help the students express themselves fully and freely.
2）To get students to understand the unexplained things around the world.
四、教学方法
Individual, pair or group work to make every student work in class.

1、exchange ideas with partners and group
2、discussion with teachers and students to express own idea.

七. 教学步骤
StepⅠ Lead-in
Students are asked to watch parts of the famous movie “E.T.”, which is very popular all over the world. (5 minutes)
And then ask some related questions about this film.
T: Have you ever seen this film before?
S: Yes.
T: Do you know the name of this film?
S: E.T.
T: Yes. The name is ET, and ET stands for extraterrestrial. It means a living creature may exist on another planet. We have already learnt a word which has the same meaning as extraterrestrial. Can you still remember it ?
S: Alien.
T: Exactly. Alien also means the living things from another world. ET is an alien. Do you love it ? I love it very much. I think it is very cute and lovely. People all over the world love it. Now, I have another question. Do you believe that alien exists in the outer space.
S: Yes.
S: No.
T: Somebody say yes. Somebody say no. In fact, it is really hard to say whether it exists or not. If it really exists, can you tell me how they come to our planet? By bicycle?
S:……
T: Of course not. They come to our planet by UFO. This is the UFO which brought ET to our planet. It is very beautiful and modern. But in reality, we have never seen such a beautiful UFO like this. Look at these four photos which are taken by some people. They are not very clear, but they seems that they are true.

通过一个关于外星人的短片和几幅图片引入今天的话题，不仅能放松学生的心情，还能调动学生的兴趣。
StepⅡ : Presentation
1. UFO
T: If we want to have a further discussion of UFO, we should know what the UFO stands for. It stands for the Unidentified Flying Objects. We translate it as “不明身份飞行物” or “飞碟”. Can you tell me why?
S: Because it is like a disk.
T: Yes. Because the shape is a disk. And it can fly in the sky. So we call it “飞碟”. Then can you tell me what it used for?
S: The alien can visit any places they want through the UFOs.
T: Terrific. Have you seen a UFO before?
S: No.
T: I think the people who have seen UFOs are very lucky. Unfortunately, I’m not lucky. And now ,I think it is good for us to sum up what we have known about the UFOs. And I need you to read it together.
(Read a short passage about the UFO)
UFOs are Unidentified Flying Objects, but no one really knows what they are. Some can be seen in the daytime are often disk- or saucer-shaped. The chances for seeing a UFO are greater for those people who live in small towns or in the country and are outside late at night. UFOs come in all shapes and sizes. Some are only small spots of light that move in strange patterns across the night sky.
2.Yeti
T: Look here, what’s this?
S: It is a map.
T: Yes, it is a map of the world. We just talked about UFO. And actually, UFOs have already been discovered all over the world. But some unexplained things only exist in some certain place.
(Show a map to the students.)
T: Look at this part. Which country is it?
S: China.
T: Oh, yes, you are so smart. This is the highest mountain of the world. It is called “Himalayas”, which is a place full of wonders and mysteries. One of the most famous mysteries is “Yeti”. In Chinese, it means ”野人”.Have you ever run into a yeti?
S: No.
T: Of course not. Because it appears in Himalayas. Now I give you a picture of yeti. Can you try to describe it ?
(Give a picture of Yeti and some useful adjectives for the description.)
Appearance : ugly/beautiful
Height: tall/short
Shoulders: broad/narrow
Arms: long/ short
Hands: big/ small
Skin: hairy/ smooth
Strength: strong/ weak
half-human half-beast/ human
T: This is what we know about yeti. It is ugly and half-man, half-beast. It is also tall, with huge shoulders and long arms and big hands. Besides, it is hairy and very strong. So next time when you run across a yeti, be careful.
3.Pyramid
T: Now, again, this map. This is the place where yeti appears. Look here, do you know which country it is？
S：It is Egypt.
T: Very good. This is a very beautiful country which has a long history. If one day Miss Zhou has a lot of money, and wants to travel in Egypt, what should I visit first? Can you give me a suggestion?
S: Pyramid.
T: Yes, the pyramids. The pyramid is also an unexplained thing existing in the world. So we’re going to look at it. Pyramids are magnificent and splendid. But until now, we still cannot explain a lot of things about it. But I think some of you know some hints and you can discuss them with your partner for about 3 minutes. Then I’d like you to give me some of your guess about it.
(Give the questions below and ask the students to discuss them.)
Who built the pyramids? ancient people/aliens……
When were the pyramids built? maybe in about 4500BC
Why were the pyramids built? 1)Keep their dead body
2)Help the soul of the Pharaoh go into the heaven……
T: Just now, you say that people use the pyramids to keep their dead body, just like this, Horrible, disgusting and ugly. And it is called ”mummy”. Why did people in Egypt make mummy?
S: In order to keep the dead body.
S: In order to prevent the dead body from decaying.
T: Yes, you are right. Do you know how did they make mummy?
The process is very crude and horrible. I don’t think I need to show you here. But I need you gather some information after class and present it to us next class. Now, let’s go on.
4. Lock Ness Monster
T: Just now, we have already mentioned the yetis, the pyramids in Egypt. Now we are going to the Great Britain to see some unexplained things. Do you want to go with me ?
S: Yes.
T: Let’s go. Here is a very beautiful lake in Scotland whose name is Lock Ness. And there is a vicious monster in the lake. I think you are very familiar with this kind of monster---the Lock Ness Monster. Do you believe that it exists or not？
S：……
S: ……
T: I also do not believe it . I think somebody takes it as a head of a monster, but may be it is just the tail of a dophin.
5. Stonehenge
T: Now, where are we? We are in Britain. And we still can some unexplained things here, because it is a mysterious country. Look here, I think all of you have ever seen this, which is called “Stonehenge”. It is located in a vast plain in the southeast part of England. And it was made around 1500BC. But nobody knows who built the Stonehenge and what it was used for. So I hope you can solve all the problems one day.

通过图片和地图的结合，可以提高学生的兴趣，同时培养他们的口语和交际能力，达到本节课训练的目的。
Step Ⅲ Discussion
T: We’ve already discussed a lot about the unexplained things all over the world. Now I want you to discuss these two topics with your partner and later on, I will ask you to share your information with us.
Topics:
1. What other unexplained things do you know about?
2. If you saw a UFO or an alien some day, what would you do?
设计意图：通过讨论，激发学生的想象力，培养学生的口头表达能力。
Step Ⅳ Review
T：Just now, you have a hot discussion and I was glad to hear what you said. Today we travel around the world on the map. At first, we went to Himalayas and found yeti and then Egypt with pyramids, and then the Great Britain with Lock Ness Monster and the Stonehenge. And in the end we also went to Bermuda to see the Bermuda triangle. Do you love this journey? Is it interesting? But although we have discussed a lot, we cannot solve the unexplained things yet. But our world is full of wonders and mysteries. So I hope you can study hard and solve these problems one day. OK?
