Description: In this lesson, ESL students learn the words, sentences and expressions that might be used by nurses and patients in the process of admission.
Goals: Acting as nurses, students will be able to help English-speaking patients to be admitted by a Chinese hospital.
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to read and write some of the most commonly used words about admission.
2. Students will be able to respond to the questions from English-speaking patients and their family in English.
3. Students will learn how to introduce a Chinese hospital in English.
Key Points
Essential expressions and key words that might be used during admission to hospital.

Teaching Procedures:

Period 1-2
Step One Warming Up热身练习 (5 mins)
Give an introduction about admission procedures.
Details具体内容:
The admission procedure includes emergency admission(急诊入院) and pre-arranged admission(常规入院). The nurses perform the admission procedures, for instance, filling in an admission card, introducing environment and regulations of the ward, gathering the patient’s information and so on. Usually, registration is the first program for seeing a doctor in hospitals.
Step Two Word Learning单词学习(30 mins)
1. Teach the students the Pronunciation of the words and the usage of some phrases. 教读单词,学习一些词汇的用法 (10 mins)
2. The students are asked to read aloud the words by themselves, memorizing their pronunciation. 单词读音巩固练习 (10 mins)
3. The students are asked to memorize the meaning the words. 单词意义速记(10 mins)
4. The students will be given a word test in class. Firstly some students are asked to read aloud the words pointed by the teacher on the screen, then some students are asked to tell the meaning of the words pointed by the teacher on the screen. Their performance will be recorded by the teacher as the basis on which the marks of classroom performance are given. 单词点读测试 (5 mins)

① wretched: /'ret∫id/ adj. 可怜的, 悲惨的, 肮脏的, 恶劣的百科词典
e.g. I feel generally wretched.

② intensive /in'tensiv/ adj.强烈的, 精深的, 透彻的
e.g. Intensive care unit(ICU) 重症监护室
e.g. Intensive care in hospitals is given to the seriously ill.

Step Three Essential Expressions职场必备句型(15mins)
1. The teacher teach the students to read aloud the expressions might used by a nurse or a patient. 教师带读 (5mins)
2. The teacher and the students translate the sentences into Chinese together. 师生共译 (5mis)
3. The students are asked to memorize the expressions by themselves. 句型速记 (2mins)
4. A sentence test is given to the students, during which the teacher asked some of the students to translate some sentences into English. 即时口译 (3mins)

1) 注意以下两个同根词读音的重音区别。

Step Four Communicative Activities互动活动 (40mins)
1. The students are asked to rearrange the order of the sentences to form a dialogue in Exercise I.对话排序(5mins)
2. Two students are asked to read aloud the dialogue. 互动游戏:牛头对马嘴 (2 mins)
3. The teacher point out the mistake if there is one. 教师点评 (3mins)
4. The students are asked to read aloud the dialogue in Exercise II and Exercise III, following the teacher.对话教读 (5 mins)

6. The students are asked to prepare a role play, in which the student plays the role of the nurse, while the teacher plays the role of the patient. 师生互动游戏:角色扮演 (20 mins)

3) clues to role play角色扮演提示:
The nurse should tell the patient where to register and open an acount, help her to find her ward, introduce the setting of ward and tell her the rules and regulations of the hospital. 学生所扮演的护士应该告诉老师所扮演的病人如何挂号,办理住院手续,帮助她找到病房,向她介绍病房设施以及相关住院规定。
