1).Philip Pirrip, known as Pip, is an orphan who lives with his sister and her husband.
2). It is Miss Havisham who has done this for him.
3). …it is he, Magwitch, who has been giving Pip the money.

A). Enable the students to learn about another novel by Charles Dickens, Great Expectations.
B).Enable the students to understand the text and analyze the main characters in this novel.
C).Enable the students to describe the characters in Great Expectations.

VII. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
Play a part of English film--Great Expectations and then ask the Ss to talk about the plot that they have known.
Talk about the background of this novel.
 (Purpose: To arouse the students’ interest by seeing film, and lead to the topic of this lesson.)
 
Step 2 Reading
Let the Ss read the passage and find out the main characters, then ask them to work in pairs to analyze the relationship among the characters.
 Call back their answer from some pairs.

(Purpose: Improve the students’ reading ability and help the Ss to get the detailed information.)
                                                              
Step 3 Speaking
1. Divide Ss into 4 groups and give several minutes for them to talk about the different characters in this novel with the help of the form above.
2.(Competition)Then ask each group to choose the number which lead to different characters. And each group will ask their representative to talk about the character that they choose in the limited time.
 
(Purpose: Develop the Ss’ ability of speaking and consolidate the passage by a competition to stimulate the enthusiasm of the Ss. Meanwhile ,this step is designed to prepare for the next step-writing.)
 
Step 4. Writing
Get the ss to write a short description of these characters in Great Expectations,

 Ask the Ss to mention the following information:

Situation in life
Personality
(Purpose: Train the Ss’ writing ability )
 
Step 5 Discussion
Ask the Ss to work in small groups to rewrite the last two paragraphs of the story, changing the story and giving it a different ending.
 The students are required to discuss and share their ideas together and decide on the changes and make notes.

Step 6 Homework
Write a new ending to the story according to their discussion
(Purpose: Develop the Ss’ skill of writing.)
 
Record after teaching design:
The topic of this period is literature-Great expectations. The main aim is to enable the students to understand the text and analyze the main characters in this novel, to talk about the different people in the novel and to describe the characters in Great expectations.
 In fact, the students are interested in literature, with the activities that the teacher designs, they are aroused. They can understand the text better and talk about the different characters and their relationship of this novel. In this happy and relaxed situation, they have much to say, and they have learned the new knowledge and improve the ability of using English.
