I. Teaching Aims

1. For skills and learning knowledge:
1) To master the words and phrases: aggressive, greet, gesture, formal, informal.
2) To improve reading skills for main idea and specific.
3) To improve abilities to describe something from video.
4) To improve abilities to communicate by both verbal and non-verbal languages.
2. For learning strategies:
1) The students can learn to deal with vocabulary from contents.
2) The Ss can develop the abilities of communicating.
3. For Cultural Awareness: Help the students to know body language is as important as verbal language and the former one varies from culture to culture.

IV. Teaching procedure
Step I. leading-in
Share a song If You are Happy with the students. (T may get the Ss to sing together)
Q: How to show your happiness in the song?
We can show our happiness by clapping hands, stumping feet and winking eyes.
That is, we can show our feeling by our body language. Our topic today is Body Language and Non-verbal Communication.
(Show the topic on the screen)
Step II. Pre-reading
1. Q: How do we do to show that we are friendly?
We shake hands with each other.
2. Show a picture of shaking hands on the screen as well as two sentences:
We shake hands to show that we are friendly. We show that we are not aggressive by this greeting gesture.
Deal with some unfamiliar words: aggressive, greet, gesture
(T explains the meaning of the words and asks the Ss to read them aloud)
Step III. While-reading
i. General reading
1. Get the Ss to read the passage for the first time and match the main ideas with paragraphs.
1) Greeting gestures in Asian countries show friendliness and respect.       Para 3
2) Body language is widely used in communication in different countries    Para 1
3) Body language is very interesting to learn.                           Para 5
4) Shaking hands with strangers shows trust in Europe and America.        Para 2
5) A common greeting gesture among American youths nowadays.          Para 4
2. Choose the best title for the whole passage.

ii. Detailed reading
1. Group work:
Get the Ss to read the passage carefully to:
(1) Find out different greeting gestures in different countries or areas
(2) Act out the gestures.
Ss may discuss in group of six.
(T gets some Ss to act out before the class. While the Ss are acting, they may explain how to do as well. After that, show the following table on the screen for a complete comprehension.)

People kiss, embrace and bow to each other in the video.
Meaning: I miss you so much; Nice to see you; Hello; How are you? ….
2. Get the students to show some other commonly used gestures in daily life.
Besides greeting gestures, there many other gestures that commonly used. T may try to show that body language play an as important role as verbal language in daily life.
Step V. Task: Choose one of the situations and make up a short play using body language as possible as you can.
1. In a restaurant.
2. In a reading-room.
3. You meet a friend, but you have to leave in a moment.
4. In the airport.
Step VI. Conclusion
1. Get the Ss to make a conclusion of today’s lesson:
Body language can express one’s thoughts and opinions.
2. Get the Ss to sing the song If You are Happy again.
3. Say good-bye to the Ss with body language.
