Teaching aims: 1. Enable the students to improve their reading skills by skimming and scanning.

2. Get the students to know details about Alice’s trip and the origin of the name of the train.

3. Help the students to describe a trip .

Teaching difficulty : Enable the students to understand the passage clearly and learn to describe their own trip.

Teaching Procedures:

Step I Leading in.

Situation : If you go to Beijing in 2008, how will you get there? Why do you choose to go by …?

Do you think it is wonderful if we go by train?

What do you want to do on a train?

Play cards

Talk to other passengers

Enjoy the food on the train

Enjoy the scenery along the trip

Read books

Listen to music

(First, get Ss to predict their trip to Beijing, and guide them to use the expression “ I go to Beijing by …” in order to review the words of transportations and compare the use of different transportation. Second, ask the Ss what they like to do on the train in order to lead in the passage. )

Step II Reading

1. Pre--- reading task: How much do you know about Australia?

Work in groups and discuss the following questions:

1) How many people live there?

2) Do you know the name of the capital?

3) Where do you think most of the people live, in the central part of the country or on the coast?

4) What do you think the central part of the country is like?

(This helps the whole class prepare background knowledge and get motivated and the students learn to work together.)
