Period 1 Introduction
The General Idea of This Period
This period aims to make the students talk about some great people and meanwhile introduces three great philosophers of ancient China as well as their famous sayings, which would help students get the general sense of philosophers and their philosophy. Through expressing their agreements and disagreements with the famous sayings and discussing what they should do in their daily life after learning Eight Honours and Eight Disgraces, the students will get enough training of their speaking ability. This period also helps the students develop the love for our motherland and Chinese traditional culture and helps the students shape strong personality and form positive life values.
Teaching Contents: Introduction and Speaking
Teaching Objectives:
Knowledge Objectives:
1. to get some information about three great philosophers.
2. to learn some well-known sayings by the philosophers.
3. to learn how to give reasons
4. to practise talking about agreements and disagreements
Ability Objectives:
1. to develop the students’ abilities of cooperative and creative
learning.
2. to train the students’ speaking ability.

1. to develop the love for our motherland .
2. to develop the love for Chinese traditional culture.
3. to help the students to shape strong personality .
4. to help the students to form positive life values.

1. to learn to describe great people and their influence.
2. to talk about agreements and disagreements.

Teaching Methods: Student-focus and TBL approaches.

Teaching procedures :
Step 1 Lead-in
Lead in by getting the students to talk about some great people .
Step 2 Introduction
Show three pictures of ancient philosophers and give the students
some information about these famous people.
Step 3 Practice
Deal with some new words and get the students to complete the gaps.
Step 4 Competition
Match the famous sayings with the philosophers.
Step 5 Speaking
Ask the students if they agree with the above famous sayings and
give their reasons.
Step 6 Learning and Discussing
1) Learn Eight Honours and Eight Disgraces.
2) Have a discussion and decide what to do in daily life.
Step 7 Homework
Write down if you agree with the philosophers’ famous sayings
and give the reasons.
